Background
The Governor General's Performing Arts Awards celebrate Canadian performers who have enriched our lives while they pursued their dreams. Created in 1992 under the patronage of the late Right Honourable Ramon John Hnatyshyn (19342002), then Governor General of Canada, the Awards recognize artists who, over a lifetime of achievement, have made an indelible contribution to Canadas cultural life. Each year, candidates for the Awards are nominated by members of. Canadas performing arts community and performing arts audience. The six Award recipients are selected from the fields of theatre, dance, classical music and opera, popular music, film, and broadcasting..
The Foundation wishes to acknowledge the patronage of Her Excellency the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson, Governor General of Canada. The presenting sponsor of the Awards is Bell Canada.
