Kenya's Camerapix Lands Major Prize at World News Summit

Africa's leading news agency, Nairobi-based Camerapix, has won the coveted Documentary Award at this year's News World conference in Dublin. Camerapix MD Salim Amin was honoured for the "professional and financial courage" he demonstrated by covering the civil war in Liberia more than a year before the rest of the world woke up to the unfolding tragedy there.

Walter Cronkite to Receive News World Lifetime Achievement Award via Live Satellite Ceremony; Pamela Wallin, Canadian Consul General, to Make Official Presentation
(Banff, Canada, October 17, 2003)
A special presentation to Walter Cronkite, recipient of this year's News World Lifetime Achievement Award, will be made by Canadian Consul General Pamela Wallin during a ceremony transmitted live from New York to delegates attending the conference in Dublin, Ireland. Mr. Cronkite, who was to originally accept his award at the conference, will now receive it in New York following his doctor's advice that he not fly to Dublin. Mr. Cronkite, who will be 87 in three weeks, has severely wrenched his back and doctors have recommended that he not fly for a month to avoid further disc damage.

News World, the premier conference for the international broadcast news industry, is offering a limited number of bursaries to allow independent documentary makers to attend this year's event in Dublin, Ireland, October 21 to 23, 2003.

Last year, News World 2002, supported by senior management of the most important news organizations in the world, launched an initiative to recognize the often undervalued role current affairs documentaries play in the vital task of informing the viewing public. News World inaugurated a special documentary award and screened a season of revealing programmes by filmmakers from Britain, the U.S.A., Switzerland, France and Germany.
