Keynote Address – Jean Malaurie, “Science Television at the Crossroads”
Plenary
Président
Over the years the internationally renowned French ethnologist Jean Malaurie has used television as an effective medium to help the public better understand what's being done about the environment. In 2003, however, science television appears to be at a crossroads, moving away from education and information programs. Some broadcasters are abandoning science altogether. Using clips and stories from his personal experiences over the years, Professor Malaurie will argue that with all the global problems we face we should be increasing, not decreasing, our use of the TV medium to help the public understand science and scientific issues.

CBC - The Nature of Things
David Dugan, Windfall Films, UK, is looking for better, more original ways of seducing viewers in the first five minutes. The fear of channel hopping has driven broadcasting executives to abandon the subtle art of tantalising an audience in favour of brain dead hype. Gabriel Turkieh, Alto media, France, goes further. He believes emotive images of war, terror, fear etc. are over-employed to hook the audience at the expense of the rational documentary approach. Case studies will drive the debate.

It seems, sometimes, that you can't make an appealing science program without expensive CGI effects, which makes it very difficult for small independent producers to compete. Here's a session that looks at some smart alternatives – amazing visual effects on relatively little money. Fantastic special effects can be done cheaply but creatively, all within the realm of possibility for relatively smaller-budget projects.

Independent producers who have a project which has preferably already gained the interest of a commissioning editor in their country, and who are seeking co-producers, have 3 - 4 minutes to pitch their concept to an audience of other independent producers and commissioning editors. At the end of each pitch the moderator asks any interested parties to raise their hands, for them to meet up at the end of the session. There will be a prearranged, designated "matchmaking" area to facilitate this collaborative initiative.

The session is a staged as a mock trial with the serious purpose of discussing Science TV at the cross roads. The prosecution claims that science TV has descended into cheesy cliché - at its peril. Little Gems
Pompéien
Sponsored By:
National Geographic
If you thought a science film needed a big budget and exposure on the likes of the BBC, ZDF or PBS to be meaningful, "Little Gems" will be a reason to think again. Meet filmmakers who operate within budget constraints, geographic realities, and by inclination, to produce programming which deserves its turn in the spotlight. We'll find out via excerpts and conversation what makes their films "Little Gems". Moderator Chris Haws will also delve into the question of whether factual programming needs a new set of rules governing style, feel and content given the reality of tighter and tighter funding - exactly the sort of environment that has given birth to the Little Gems we'll be seeing. Such rules are in the drafting stage already in Denmark, based on the Dogme rules for cinema. Among other things, Dogme adherents swear off all CGI, animation, staging, re-creation and authorship of a film. Will all this spark a lively discussion? Count on it."

Master Class: Mutants
Pompéien
Sponsored By:
Channel 4 International
Mutants is a provocative and ambitious production of Tiger Aspect Productions, Channel 4 and Discovery Channel US. Currently shooting in Europe, the USA and South Africa this 3 x 60 series investigates the secrets of human development through an exploration of nature's aberrations – mutation. Traditionally a disturbing and controversial subject given its focus on deformity, ‘monsters’ and abnormality, mutation is used to explore how the human body works. By studying the dramatic ways in which the genetic message can go awry, modern geneticists can gain crucial insights into the way genes control our development. The series is written and presented by Dr Armand Marie Leroi, of Imperial College, London. This work in progress session is an exploration how a team of filmmakers are bringing complex – and potentially distasteful - science to the screen. And how they aim to balance the precarious mix of sensationalism and science.

String theory: It’s the Holy Grail of physics – the search for ultimate law and order in the universe. And in the last few years, excitement has grown among scientists as they’ve pursued a revolutionary new approach to unifying nature’s forces. To the uninitiated, it’s totally mind-boggling. But physicist Brian Greene – one of the stars of last year’s Science Congress – has a rare gift for conveying physics in vivid everyday images, a gift that has turned his recent book, The Elegant Universe, into a mighty bestseller. Now Greene brings his talent, youth, and vitality to television for the first time. A highly innovative, Matrix-like production style makes the surreal world of string theory spring to life on the screen.

Compare Approaches – Thrills, Spills and TV Builds

This year will see a rash of programmes in which pioneering aircraft are rebuilt, all in the purpose of marking the centennial of flight. Reconstructing the machines of the past has become a staple of science programmes, but the genre spans a great variety of approaches - from historical investigations, to following the agonising ups and downs of the build process. Whatever the treatment, these are always challenging programmes to make. In this Master Class, producers come together to share their experiences, good and bad.
