Empire, Programme 2: White Plague
Empire is a major six-part Channel 4 history series, written and presented by Oxford Professor NIALL FERGUSON, which tells the spectacular story of the rise and fall of the British Empire. How did a once insignificant island in the North Atlantic come to rule a quarter of the world's population? And how, in the process, did it set in place so many of the key institutions of the modern world? From America to Jamaica, India to Australia, Burma to Zambia, Niall Ferguson argues that the world we know today is in large measure the product of Britain's Age of Empire. Yet many of the beneficial effects of the Empire have been forgotten, he says: "The Empire's sins tend to be better remembered than its achievements." The second film, White Plague charts the vast migration of Britons - unlike anything seen before or since - which turned the North American and Australian continents white. The white colonists proclaimed their faith in liberty, but their triumph was based on expulsion and enslavement. Yet it was the biggest beneficiaries of the Empire - the Americans - who were the first to rebel against it.

Yet many of the beneficial effects of the Empire have been forgotten, he says: "The Empire's sins tend to be better emembered than its achievements." The Mission tells the story of the Victorian voluntary agencies: the church missions. Focusing on the life of David Livingstone, the programme shows how the missionaries hoped to modernise as well as convert African and Asian societies - and how their ultimate success in Africa came only after disastrous failure in India.

George Orwell is one of those well-known figures who many people know just well enough to maintain a misconception or two; for example that he was a blinkered anti-communist or a tweedy retired copper or a prophet of technological oppression. The aim of this TV programme, made to commemorate Orwell’s centenary, was to replace these half-truths with a complete and satisfying life story. This was a tough job because there is neither moving picture archive of Orwell nor any recordings of his voice. The real Orwell can now only be found in his written legacy - mostly autobiographical journalism but diaries and letters too. He comes across as a witty but occasionally cantankerous campaigner for truth as well as being a very approachable champion of English popular culture. Unfortunately, however eloquent and relevant he was, he remains an invisible wordsmith. So we made him visible. Using Orwell’s written legacy we created all the audio-visual archive needed. Confessional writing became interviews, reportage became newsreel, essays became film essays, diaries became home movies. The invented scenes were then intercut with real ones to create a programme that looked like a plentifully resourced archive film though it was in fact a fake - which was also a true, ’documentary’ story. The Guardian called it, "an inspired portrait". The Daily Mail said it, "may have changed the rules for bio-pics". According to Time Out it invented "a new genre".

Two millennia ago, in the Roman province of Judea, Jesus was crucified by imperial troops. Thousands before him had suffered the same fate. But unlike his predecessors on the cross, Jesus did not drop from history. Instead, his memory was kept alive by a small band of Jews; men and women who held fast to their conviction that Jesus was the Messiah.... that Jesus had been anointed by God to announce His kingdom on earth. Against the odds, in the face of hostility, indifference, and dissent, these impoverished subjects of Rome managed to carry the news of Jesus out of Judea and around the Roman Empire. They managed to plant a movement that would one day conquer Rome itself. There were Barnabas and Priscilla; James, Stephen, Titus. And most famously of all, there were Peter and Paul. If one was The Rock upon which the church was founded, the other was a river, flooding its banks to reach all regions and peoples. Combining the actual words of Paul, Luke, and other an! cient writers with period dramatizations and location footage from around the Mediterranean, PETER AND PAUL is the story of a revolution that changed the world.

A new look at the Irish Republican Army’s collaboration with Germany during WWII. The two were joined not by a mutual regard but by the desire to make war on the British. It was a liaison characterized mainly by mistrust and poor communication. The film looks at the incompetence of IRA organization and the strangley inept efforts of the Germans to organise a coup d'etat in Eire. Irish intelligence was startlingly efficient in dealing with the threat, breaking codes, capturing spies. The story is a tragi-comedy,with parachute jumps, submarine landings, jailbreaks. In the end, however, Ireland escaped only because the Nazi's turned their attention to the East.

Speed Machines is a new series on the history of speed and the intense rivalry between different ships, planes, cars and trains in their bid to be the fastest. Combining stories of technological advance with tales of individual heroism, Speed Machines captures the spirit of an age when speed was all-important. The 1930s was a highpoint for ocean-going liners. Crossing the Atlantic by boat was the only way to reach the US and competition between the French and British shipyards was never less than fierce, a focus for patriotic pride. The British Queen Mary and French Normandie epitomised the golden age of the ocean liners, floating Art Deco palaces that competed intensely to win the Blue Riband: the prize for the fastest Atlantic crossing; a Holy Grail for the two countries - and a great bit of marketing.

They often give conflicting accounts of Jesus' life, death and resurrection - accounts written decades after the events. The collection we recognise as the New Testament did not appear in the form we now know it until over three centuries after Jesus' death. The New Testament is the basis of a faith with two billion adherents. Its composition an intriguing story.
