This film examines: • How likely it is that terrorists could acquire the necessary materials • How easy it could be to manufacture one • What the physical consequences could be for the victims The programme’s own research then shows what could happen if terrorists exploded either a large bomb in Trafalgar Square or a smaller bomb in Washington DC. • It models how long the radioactive fall-out could last • How great the risk of getting cancer from the fall-out would be • How far away you would have to be, to be safe • How expensive a clean-up in the aftermath could be and so why we might have to consider abandoning those areas worst affected Mixing rigorous science and interviews with top experts in the field, Horizon reveals the reality behind the myth of this new and disturbing terrorist weapon.

Istanbul, one of the great cities in the world, will one day be hit by a major disaster. This is the forecast of a group of scientists who have uncovered a new and truly terrifying natural phenomenon - the earthquake storm. Tens of thousands of lives may be at risk. Earthquakes were always thought to be random events, impossible to predict. But a trail of clues leading from ancient ruins in Crete, to the mighty San Andreas fault in California, suggested otherwise. It seems that, in some cases, one earthquake can set off another even years later, and that quakes can spread out from each other like a storm blowing across a country. The idea seemed preposterous, until scientists looked in Northern Turkey. There, earthquakes appear to have blown along the North Anatolian fault in a westerly direction since 1939. Using data from these events, geologist Geoff King made a prediction. If the earthquake storm theory was right, the next city in line was Izmit. In August 1999, he was proved right. 25,000 people died in one night. Now King has made another forecast. The storm will strike next in Istanbul.

Could it be that the physical make-up of our brains programmes us to believe in God? This extraordinary idea - that religion is as biologically part of us as the desire to eat or have sex - lies at the heart of this week’s Horizon. Rudi Affolter thought he had gone to hell. Gwen Tighe believed her baby was Jesus. Both suffer from the unusual brain disorder temporal lobe epilepsy and many scientists now believe that this condition may be key to explaining how all of us experience religion. Controversially, some argue that several religious leaders, including St. Paul and Moses, may also have been sufferers. Most convincing of all is the evidence that Ellen White, a religious visionary and one of the founders of the Seventh Day Adventist Movement, had the condition. One man has taken this work further than anyone else. Dr Michael Persinger claims he can induce a religious experience in almost anyone just by stimulating their temporal lobes. So Horizon gives him the ultimate test. Can he turn devout atheist Professor Richard Dawkins into a believer?

This week, Horizon is doing something completely new. For the first time the programme is conducting its own experiment. Its aim is to put one of the most popular but controversial forms of medicine - homeopathy - to the test. If the experiment works, Horizon will win one million dollars from a man who has made his living debunking scientific fraudsters and the paranormal. If it fails, then it may be that the millions of people who use homeopathy, including such famous and influential figures as the Royal Family, Bill Clinton and Paul Macartney, have been wasting their money. Homeopathy’s most controversial principle is that diluting medicines makes them stronger. Remedies are often diluted to the equivalent of a single drop of medicine in all the world’s oceans. At this level there cannot be a single molecule of substance left in any treatment. The medicine is just plain water. This puts homeopathy in direct conflict with science. If the treatment doesn’t contain any medicine, how can it possibly work? Horizon tries to find out.

Are we alone in the Universe? Or are there aliens somewhere in space? This dramatic film reveals the new evidence which suggests that not only might other lifeforms be out there, they may even be living on the planet right next door to us -Mars. In an epic tale of human endeavour, Horizon charts the search for life on Mars. That quest began when an astronomer was convinced he could see canals and cities on the Red Planet. His observation spawned hundreds of B-movies and a worldwide obsession with little green men. But when space probes arrived in the 1970s, reality intruded. Mars turned out to be savagely cold. If you were to walk on the planet, your blood would boil and you would swiftly drown in your own bodily fluids. It seemed nothing could survive there. But recent discoveries have shown that Mars has all the ingredients for life – including what may be huge underground oceans. Many scientists now believe that there could be lifeforms deep below the surface either alive now, or frozen in suspended animation. It begs the question: what might an alien look like?

Have you ever wished to party night and day for days on end? Have you ever wondered what it would do for your career to work just that little bit longer than everyone else? Now, thanks to narcolepsy, all that could be possible. Narcolepsy is a baffling disease. Its sufferers live in a twilight world between sleep and waking. Their symptoms include nightmarish hallucinations and paralysing fits that can strike when they laugh, cry or have sex. But for years, medicine was stumped. No one could work out what was going on. But now, groundbreaking new research into the condition has raised the possibility of drugs that could remove the need for sleep for days on end. For narcoleptics, these drugs could offer a chance to escape from their restricted world. For the rest of us, they could lead to a true 24 hour society - for good or ill. In a powerful film that mixes cutting-edge science with deeply moving testimony from narcoleptics, Horizon explores narcolepsy and where this strange condition may one day take us all.

For the last two months the world has been paralysed by the spread of the disease called SARS. Some have told us that it is more deadly than AIDS and could wipe out millions of lives. Others have said it is nothing to worry about at all. Some have said that we could have a vaccine for it very soon; others that we may not have one for years - if ever. Some claim it could spread to any country anywhere at anytime; others claim it is just a problem for the Chinese. Because of SARS, stock markets have collapsed. Millions of people have fled affected areas. There has been global panic. But was it all necessary or just an overreaction? Horizon has filmed in Hong Kong, China, Singapore, and Canada. It has a series of exclusive interviews with the team from the World Health Organisation co-ordinating the global response to SARS. This is the real story of SARS, seen from the inside by the people who actually fought the disease. This is the film that provides the answers.

Five years ago a little blue pill changed the world. For millions of men it was the sexual revolution for which they had been waiting. Since then, the question has always been, could Viagra do for women what it has done for men? Now, after more than fifty years of research, scientists are at last beginning to unlock the mysteries of female sexuality. Horizon reveals how the challenge of dealing with women’s problems is demanding a wholly new approach and that ‘Viagra for Women’ may not live up to the hype. After Viagra’s launch, the hope was that the drug that was so successful in treating impotence in men, could also help women. But then researchers found crucial differences between male and female sexual problems and clinical trials have shown that Viagra will do nothing for the majority of women who seem to have sexual problems. Now startling results from a small pilot study in rural Scotland are suggesting that scientists have been looking in the wrong place - and that science might now, at last, be on the right track to finding an effective sex-pill for many more women.

A small piece of stone, unearthed in an African cave, may rewrite human history. If the message it contains is true, then one of the great sagas of human evolution - how our ancestors stopped being mere animals and became modern thinking human beings has all been based on a mistake. The history books say that some 37,000 years ago, our ancestors arrived in Europe for the first time. Suddenly, cave paintings appeared - clear evidence of sophisticated thought. It seemed there had been “Human Revolution”. That revolution was so profound that it allowed us to triumph over even our nearest relatives, the Neanderthals. They were wiped out within years of our arrival in Europe. It seemed the sudden dawning of thought has led to us dominating the planet like no other creature. But now a small piece of ochre in a South African cave has changed everything. It appears to be a work of abstract art, an example of advanced thought - and yet it is twice as old as the human revolution. Evidence has also emerged suggesting that the Neanderthals were developing complex thinking too. Together these facts are forcing a huge rethink about our origins and what makes us human.

Easter Island is one of the most haunting places on the planet. For years adventurers and scientists have been bewitched by this remote place and its huge stone statues. Now, in a dramatic and moving film, Horizon reveals the truth about what happened there; who the original settlers were; why they built those statues; and how they met their catastrophic end. What emerges is a terrible parable for us all. On Easter Day 1722, two worlds collided. A people isolated from the world for hundreds of years met the most advanced society of the age. But when the Dutch explorers went ashore on that distant Pacific Island, they were dumbfounded. The “primitive” islanders had created hundreds of huge stone statues. The Dutch had stumbled upon a bizarre and extraordinary civilisation Yet within just one hundred and fifty years the population of many thousands collapsed to one hundred and eleven. They died taking with them their story. Horizon now brings together the latest scientific research to reveal the true story of Easter Island. It is a tale of one of the greatest - and ultimately the most tragic - adventures in the history of human civilisation.

Horizon’s “Secret Life of Caves” is a journey deep into some of the most spectacular underground caverns on earth. Teams of scientists venture into a frightening subterranean world to discover how life might first have formed on our planet. The Big Room at Carlsbad Caverns is as high as a 30 storey building and as big as six football fields. Lechuguilla Canyon has been mapped for more than a hundred miles and is home to places like “Freak-Out Traverse”, “Death Pit” and “Chasm Drop”. As scientists began to explore these two huge caves, they found themselves on an exhilarating ride into the deep. They would encounter bizarre troglodyte creatures, poisonous gases - and finally something wonderful. It seems that such caves are home to some of the most primitive life forms ever discovered - a snapshot of life as it first began on our planet almost 4 billion years ago. Their discovery suggests that life may once have begun deep underground and that these microbes may have actually carved out our planet and even given rise to us all.

This is the story of one family’s journey into the dark heart of modern medicine. Featuring powerful and moving interviews with his parents, it tells the tale of how teenager Jesse Gelsinger died because a scientific experiment went terribly wrong. It is now clear, in the wake of Jesse’s death, that one of the most seductive ideas of modern science - Gene Therapy - may never live up to its hype. Gene therapy is a beautifully simple concept. For any disease caused by a genetic mutation - and that means almost everything - you simply replace the defective genes with healthy ones. The only problem was how to get the healthy genes into the patient’s cells. Jim Wilson, from the University of Pennsylvania, believed he had the answer - use a form of flu virus, with all the dangerous parts removed, to carry the healthy genes. One of those who agreed to participate in a safety trial of this modified virus was Jesse Gelsinger. What happened next would lead to Jesse’s death and the destruction of Wilson’s career amid terrible recriminations. It is possible that science of gene therapy has been irreparably damaged.

This film follows a group of scientists into two very different deserts – the Sahara, which is only a few thousand years old, and the Namib, which has been around for millennia. In the Libyan Desert in Egypt the scientists find proof for the first time that parts of the Sahara west of the Nile must have been heavily populated before the Egyptian Empire had reached its zenith. While extreme climate conditions caused the extinction of certain life forms in the Sahara far-reaching adaptation has helped them survive for a long time in the Namib Desert of southwestern Africa. The film also documents ethnologist Susanne Berzborn’s studies of the Nama – a tribe that has managed to survive and maintain its traditions with the help of a complex grazing system.

To celebrate this milestone, NOVA presents the definitive documentary on the invention of the airplane. While many shows have retold the Wright brothers' personal story, no program has properly explored the astonishing inventiveness that they applied to the problem of powered flight. NOVA reveals the popular image of the Wrights as amateur bicycle mechanics who tinkered their way into the sky to be a total myth. The program features exhilarating footage of flights by exclusively commissioned replicas of the frail craft that first propelled humans toward the clouds. Watch as the triumph of powered flight comes alive once more in NOVA’s epic documentary, Wright Brothers’ Flying Machine.
