Why Arts? Why Arts on Television?
Plenary

To start the conference, we will present some facts and figures and discuss who watches arts programs and why. Can TV offer the skeptical viewer the arts in a friendly unpretentious way to access arts or do you always have to experience the arts in-the-flesh to truly understand the subject? Leading arts commissioners from international broadcasters - including the BBC and CBC, demonstrate why they believe that putting the arts in primetime is a good idea.

Does Television Really Hate Visual Arts?
Panorama Room
Sponsored By:
NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation)
There is nothing more visual than the 'visual arts'. Hundreds of thousands of people flock to major exhibitions and buy expensive catalogues, but, when it comes to television, pure visual arts are usually non-existent. What is the problem? Where does video art -- one of the most recent and most successful branches of the visual arts -- fit? This session will look at the Arts in our daily life and examine the way they should be and could be reflected in the media. We will also debate whether democracy and the lowest-common-denominator theory are incompatible with culture at large and the Arts in particular. A showreel with recent productions will be screened.

Say "book channel" and most people's eyes glaze over at the unimaginable tedium of it all. Building a channel based on books requires vision, wit and energy. What are the challenges, trials and tribulations of such a quixotic enterprise? This session is a case study of a niche channel start up. Daniel Richler talks about the only 24-hour literary channel on the planet and David Kines brings contrast to the picture with stories of the startup of a far more commercially viable "arts" channel - MuchMusic.

Everyone knows that, in any given country, relatively few people have direct access to the arts. Except for music which can be heard on various audio supports as well as radio, everything else must be seen live on stage or in a museum. Television and its derivatives become henceforth the only medium by which arts can be made available to a large audience; television is the greatest promoter of the arts. In that light, this session will explore such questions as: Are there new ways of funding art programming? If the traditional broadcast funding sources aren’t sufficient, where do we go? Can national arts promotion agencies provide the solution? Are major DVD distributors the solution? Can private arts funding agencies provide the solution? What kind of sponsors can be expected to contribute to the promotion of art on television? We will investigate the experiences of various producers and broadcasters in Europe and in North America as they unveil different models used within different countries.

Adapting Theatre: The Medium or the Message?
Panorama Room
Sponsored By:
Rhombus International
When faced with a piece of theatre do you adapt it to the medium of TV and create as effective a television presentation as possible, or do you do everything to preserve its integrity as a theatrical event? This is an issue of principle, but practical issues always seem to intervene such as cast availability, budget, broadcaster preference, budget, agreement of rights holders (or, worse, their estates) in the underlying work, budget, etc. Under what circumstances is it best just to point a truckload of cameras at the stage and cover the action as sympathetically as possible?

Opera on the Box
Panorama Room
While public service broadcasters show less and less opera, more and more seems to be produced. What does the music-loving public expect from television? Do they mainly want stars and the same repertoire all over again? Is there any room for more adventurous programming? Or should TV, as some broadcasters suspect, only offer digests like “The Best of …”? What does DVD offer the opera lover? Can it exist without the programmes paid for by television? All of these questions including the issue of horrendous fees for artists and access fees to opera houses will be discussed and examples of a variety of work will be shown.
